Great Little Carry On - Did Well Throughout Italy
By Fermaint
American Airlines sent me this suitcase as a replacement for a 16-year old Silhouette 5 that they damaged. I lucked out because this case replaced the old Silhouette I bought at the Navy Exchange in Puerto Rico in 1996 or 1997. I got it for $75 back then. The company that handled the replacement offered me a Silhouette 12, but told me if I was willing to wait two months, the new Spheres would be out. I decided to wait it out and was pleasantly surprised when FedEx delivered the bag at the beginning of January. There weren't even pictures of it online at the time I got mine. The case is very aesthetically pleasing, is relatively light, and holds a lot of clothes provided that you've mastered the art of packing. I'm always amazed at how much I can pack into these 22" carry ons. The bag has a little fabric pocket for toiletries (I miss the old, grey plastic pouch) and each half of the case is sealed with a zippered compartment. It makes organization a snap. The handle is comfortable, but the gel pad is a bit gimmicky. The wheels are smooth and swivel 360 degrees, so it is nearly effortless to push, pull or nudge the case along. It's also fun to spin it while walking down to the gate. The liner is a nice color, but on the handle half of the case, the liner is not glued down to the bottom. It is attached only at the edges, so the fabric is very loose. I didn't like that too much, but it did not cause any difficulty. The handle does limit the storage capacity, but it creates a channel within which you can stuff socks, underwear, gloves, hats (pick one or two). This case is zippered, which I am not a fan of, but it worked well and seemed very sturdy. I did have an issue with the lock. After setting the lock, the combination ended up being some numbers other than the ones I thought I had selected. A Google search on how to unlock Samsonite combination locks yielded the information I needed to get into clean underwear during my trip to Italy this January.Incidentally, I did put the bag to use right after I got it. I took a 12 day trip to Italy with my wife and the bag held up well. The bag travelled on multiple types of transportation and was dragged over various smooth surfaces, such as airport floors, sidewalks, escalators and elevators. When traversing the rough cobblestones found throughout Italy I piggy-backed it on a used Silhouette 5 that I found on Craigslist. The Sphere travelled on planes, trains, busses and automobiles. It got thrown in the baggage hold of a commuter jet and several busses. It fit nicely in the overhead bins on two airliners. It's stylish design made it look righ at home while riding Italy's high speed italo trains at 300 km/h. It maintained its composure while navigating on water taxis and vaporetos and kept my contents dry while being dragged around Venice during rainy and cold, windy conditions. About the only things it didn't ride on was a donkey, a scooter or a hot air balloon, but I'm sure it could handle those with aplomb as well. All in all the bag performed wonderfully while travelling through the other Italian cities we visited. It's a great bag, but I wouldn't pay $200 or more for this bag or any other bag out there. Call me cheap. As I stated earlier, this was a replacement at no cost to me. I gave it 4 stars and not 5 because I do not like the fact that the case is zippered and not latched like this line used to be in the past. Also, I am not confident that the wheels would hold up to the abuse that the wheels on the old Silhouette 5 can take. That old one went on countless flights and road trips with me and I dragged it throughout the worst surfaces in the US, Puerto Rico, UK, Mexico, Cuba, Canada, India, China, and Hong Kong without a hiccup. It would have still continued strong were it not for American Airlines damaging the handle. To their credit, they owned up to the mishap and provided a good replacement. My Samsonite Sphere is black and I like it. Happy travelling!
