Lightweight but oddly shaped, durability doubtful
By S. Lionel
My measurements:Dimensions: 21.75x14x8 inchesWeight: 4.4 poundsAirlines have a bewildering variety of restrictions on carry-on luggage, and some international airlines place absurdly low limits on the size and/or weight of carry-ons. The Antler Duolite comes close to meeting the requirements of most airlines, though like nearly all carry-ons it is slightly longer than what is allowed on many airlines. It is indeed Super Light, weighing two pounds less than a similarly-sized bag I also bought, the Victorinox Luggage Werks Traveler 4.0 Ultra-Light Carry-On Bag. How does it manage this? The main source of the lightness is the use of a partial plastic shell instead of the heavier woven nylon. I was disappointed, however, to find that the shell is quite thin and does not cover the back of the bag the way the product description would have you believe. I attached several photos showing the bag from various angles. The plastic shell is on the sides only and is a kind I have seen damaged very easily by airline travel. The back is woven nylon with a very thin padding. If you knew that you would always carry this onto the plane, it might not matter so much, but sometimes you are forced to check the bag and I don't think the Antler would survive this. The interior of the Antler bag is simple, but as you can see by another of the photos. it is not the same height all the way across, being shorter toward the handle. An advantage the Antler has is that it can be expanded an inch or so through a zippered gusset.I found the construction not up to the quality of the Victorinox (which cost about $70 more.) The seams were not protected as well, the interior straps were flimsy and secured with small Velcro tabs, and the wheels looked as if they were about to fall off. The Antler does have some pockets on the inner lid, as well as the zippered compartment on the outside which is big enough to hold most laptops, though with minimal padding. A three-digit TSA lock is included. In the end I decided to return the Antler and keep the Victorinox. The main reason was the reduction in usable space due to the slanted top. Secondary was my perception of the quality being lower.
